Clay Necklaces

Hello!

You know those clay necklaces that people are selling all over Instagram? Yeah well it turns out that they're super-duper easy to make yourself! (and fun!) And to make your life a little easier if got a step-by-step tutorial on how to make them, plus a few ideas as well!

you will need / / string, a toothpick or skewer, polymer clay ( I got mine from Spotlight)

Step 1 / / First pull off a small section of clay and start kneading it between your fingers until it's soft, this will make it easier to shape the beads.
Step 2 / / Next make the bead into your desired shape. I started with a simple sphere. To do this just roll the clay on a flat surface or in-between your hands.

Step 3 / / Grab your toothpick and carefully push it through the center of your bead, you may have to do it a few times to make sure it's wide enough to fit your string through.

Step 4 / / For my next bead I mixed black and white clay together to make a grey. To do this just get a small bit of both black and white and knead it together until the colour is even and consistent.

Step 5 / / Try experimenting with different patterns, textures and shapes! Such as pricking the surface for a different texture or adding different coloured dots and lines.

/ / To make a 'swirly' bead get three or so different colours and roll them into small rolls. Then flatten them and place them on top of each other, leaving a small space of colour between each one.

/ / Then flatten it out and simply roll it up! (like a playdough snail!?) And shape it so it blends together without mixing the colours. Insert the toothpick just like you did with the other beads!

/ / To make a longer bead roll your clay on a flat surface like a sausage. Carefully thread you toothpick through the bead. If you want you can bend the bead, just be careful not to make the inside hole to small. This ones a bit trickier and you may have to try a few times to get it just right.

/ / You can also try mixing two colours together for a cool half and half pattern! Just shape two small balls and press together, then roll in-between your hands until they form together!

Step 6  / / Next place all of your beads onto a baking tray and cook at around 150 degrees for half an hour, (or until firm, they'll harden as they cool as well). You may need to cook them for a bit longer depending on your oven.

Step 7 / / And you're done! Now simply thread the beads onto your string and tie a knot at the end!

Hope you enjoyed this DIY and maybe even try it yourself! It is really fun to make and even though this post went on and on it is really easy too! If you do decided to give it a go just tag me on Instagram! I'd love to see it!
